
The new powerplant combines an unusual flat-engine layout, two turbochargers, and a six-speed manual transmission. A prototype of the powertrain made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
A New Chapter in RUF’s History
RUF is best known for cars derived from the Porsche 911, although its modern models feature proprietary bodies, chassis, and engineering solutions. One of its most prominent projects is the mid-engine CTR3, introduced in 2007. The current Evo version is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six producing 800 hp and can reach 236 mph (380 km/h).
Extracting more power from the existing engine could have required significant compromises in durability and cooling. The engineers therefore developed an entirely new engine intended for the company’s next generation of vehicles.

Eight Cylinders and Two Turbochargers
The engine is designated B8. It displaces 4.8 liters and has eight cylinders arranged horizontally in two opposing banks. This configuration lowers the center of gravity and reduces the engine’s vertical dimensions, although it requires complex exhaust and cooling systems.
Two turbochargers help the engine produce more than 1,000 hp and approximately 738 lb-ft (1,000 N·m) of torque. The powertrain does not use electric motors or a hybrid system. All power is sent to the wheels through a specially developed six-speed manual transmission.
Testing With a CTR3-Based Prototype
RUF used a modified CTR3 chassis to test the new engine. The prototype’s wheelbase was extended by 3.9 inches (100 mm) to accommodate the larger powerplant and the necessary auxiliary equipment. The test car retains the familiar proportions of the CTR3, but its structure has already been adapted to the new layout.
The company has not said whether the future production model will be a further evolution of the CTR3 or receive a separate name. Performance figures, weight, production volume, and the start of manufacturing also remain undisclosed.
