The new sedan is intended to help the company strengthen its position in the affordable battery-electric vehicle segment, where the German automaker currently trails domestic brands and Tesla by a considerable margin.
Volkswagen EV Sales Are Declining
During the first half of 2026, all Volkswagen Group brands sold approximately 30,900 electric vehicles in China. The figure remains modest for a group with such a broad model lineup, particularly given the large share of new-energy vehicles in the Chinese market.
Volkswagen's position is being affected by the rapid growth of domestic companies. Chinese automakers regularly introduce new models with long driving ranges, modern equipment and competitive pricing. Under these conditions, European brands have been forced to accelerate the development of vehicles designed specifically for local buyers.

Jetta Brand's First Electric Vehicle
The Jetta M6 will become the Volkswagen budget brand's first fully electric model. Images and key specifications have appeared in the public database of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, where new vehicles undergo mandatory certification.
In terms of proportions, the M6 is a large sedan with a gently sloping roofline. The front features slim headlights and a closed panel in place of a conventional grille. A similar layout is used by many modern electric vehicles, including the Tesla Model 3. At the rear, the taillights are connected by a light bar.

Dimensions and Technical Specifications
The Jetta M6 measures 189.2 inches (4.806 meters) long, 74.6 inches (1.895 meters) wide and 59.1 inches (1.5 meters) tall. Its wheelbase spans 111 inches (2.82 meters), suggesting a reasonably spacious cabin. Depending on the version, curb weight will range from 3,433 to 3,589 pounds (1,557 to 1,628 kilograms).
The base version will use a single electric motor rated at 113 kW (152 hp; 154 PS). A more expensive variant is listed at 145 kW (194 hp; 197 PS). Battery capacity, driving range and charging speed have not yet been disclosed.

Targeting the Affordable Segment
Jetta was originally established as a relatively affordable brand for China and has so far focused primarily on gasoline-powered vehicles. The introduction of the M6 indicates that Volkswagen intends to extend this strategy to the electric vehicle market.
The model's market prospects will depend on its price, battery specifications and equipment. The Jetta M6 will expand the group's lineup in China, but achieving a meaningful increase in sales will require it to compete with numerous domestic sedans already available in the same class.
