But times are changing, and even the most conservative brands are confidently stepping into the electric era. The new duo of the updated Solterra and the all-new Uncharted shows that Subaru has finally found its electric groove.
Solterra — Back Stronger Than Ever
Subaru’s first electric vehicle, the Solterra, launched in 2022 but didn’t generate much buzz. Sharing a platform with the Toyota bZ4X, its specs were solid but not standout. Initial sales were modest, and it was eclipsed by more exciting competitors. Subaru took the feedback to heart — and the refreshed model is now more capable than ever.
The updated Solterra delivers 338 horsepower (252 kW) from its 73 kWh battery, offering up to 330 miles of range. That’s a meaningful jump from the original’s approximately 250 miles. It sprints from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, backed by Subaru’s renowned all-wheel drive system that distributes power precisely for confident handling on highways and light off-road adventures.

Uncharted — A Fresh New Direction
The Uncharted marks an exciting new chapter. This sporty SUV-coupe is 4.52 meters (about 14.8 feet) long and noticeably more stylish than its sibling thanks to its fastback profile and expressive lighting.
Powertrain choices include:
- Top AWD trim: 338 hp, 77 kWh battery, approximately 325 miles of range.
- Long Range RWD: 221 hp with the same 77 kWh pack, delivering up to 370 miles per charge.
- Base model: 165 hp and 58 kWh battery for around 280 miles of range.
The slight range penalty on the AWD version comes courtesy of the stylish 20-inch wheels. Sometimes style demands a compromise.
Subaru DNA Intact: Capable AWD and Durability
Even as an EV, the Uncharted stays true to Subaru values. The all-wheel drive system dynamically manages torque between the wheels for superior traction and stability. 0-60 mph in 5 seconds feels engaging yet composed — classic Subaru balance.
Inside the Cabin
Both models feature spacious, modern interiors dominated by a large 14-inch touchscreen. The driver display is mounted high near the windshield. Climate controls built into the screen give a clean, premium look. Cargo space is practical: about 14.5 cubic feet in the Uncharted and 16 cubic feet in the Solterra.

A Couple of Caveats
Charging speed is the main area for improvement. A Level 2 home charger (22 kW) can juice it up in about 4 hours. Road trips mean dealing with 150 kW DC fast charging — decent but behind some class leaders. Daily commuting, however, is effortless.
Pricing and Launch Timeline
The updated Solterra arrives late 2025, with the Uncharted following in early 2026. Pricing details are still under wraps, but early rumors point to a base model around $37,000 and the top AWD version nearing $46,000 (approximate market price for the United States). Subaru is clearly aiming to make a serious impact — and these models give them a real shot.
Bottom Line
Subaru took its time entering the EV space, but the Solterra and Uncharted arrive well-prepared. One refines what the brand started, while the other injects fresh style and personality. With competitive pricing, they could become favorites among drivers who want an electric SUV with real character.
