The model was developed by Steve Nichols, known for his work on McLaren Formula 1 cars during the 1980s. The limited-production roadster combines a naturally aspirated V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a minimal amount of onboard electronics.
A Project From a Formula 1 Engineer
Steve Nichols contributed to the development of several notable McLaren race cars, including the MP4/1, MP4/3, and MP4/4. The latter became one of the most successful cars in Formula 1 history: Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won 15 of the 16 championship rounds during the 1988 season.
For the road-going Nichols N1A, the designer and engineer drew inspiration from early McLaren racing cars. The vehicle features a low open body, pronounced wheel arches, and compact proportions. However, it is not a retro-styled replica, but a modern supercar constructed using carbon fiber and aluminum.
Under 900 Kilograms and Two V8 Options
The N1A features a carbon-fiber body, while its chassis incorporates composite materials and aluminum. As a result, the car's curb weight remains below 900 kilograms. By comparison, most modern sports cars with similar power outputs are considerably heavier due to complex safety systems, extensive electronics, and hybrid components.
Customers will be offered two naturally aspirated Chevrolet V8 engines. The entry-level version uses a 6.2-liter LT1 producing 482 horsepower and 637 Nm of torque. The more powerful variant receives a 7.0-liter LT7 rated at 710 horsepower and 813 Nm.
In both versions, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. An automatic gearbox will not be offered for the N1A. With the 7.0-liter engine, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes approximately 3.5 seconds.
No Screens or Electronic Driver Aids
The N1A's interior follows a deliberately minimalist approach. There is no central display, infotainment system, or complex digital interface. Instead, the layout focuses on the driving position, physical controls, and outward visibility. The car also omits electronic assistance systems that typically intervene in the operation of the engine, brakes, or transmission.
The suspension uses double wishbones at both the front and rear. Adjustable dampers allow the setup to be configured for regular roads or track use. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide grip, measuring 245 mm wide at the front and 305 mm at the rear.
Production and Pricing
Nichols Cars plans to build only 150 examples of the N1A. The base price will be approximately €450,000. A separate Icon 88 edition of 15 cars will commemorate the McLaren MP4/4's 15 victories during the 1988 championship season. Pricing for these models will reach around €500,000.
Production will be handled by British engineering company RML Group, which specializes in limited-production sports cars and advanced automotive projects. The Nichols N1A will occupy a rare position among modern supercars by offering a naturally aspirated engine without a hybrid system, extensive displays, or automated driving controls.
