Orders were originally expected to open in September, but the vehicle is now available to reserve in Germany. The first version offered is the i3 50 xDrive First Edition, featuring all-wheel drive and an expanded equipment package.
A New Model in the Neue Klasse Lineup
The BMW i3 will become the second production model in the new Neue Klasse family after the electric iX3 crossover. BMW uses this designation for vehicles built on a new architecture developed specifically for EVs. The automaker expects the platform to deliver longer driving ranges, shorter charging times, and more advanced electronic systems.
BMW says customer interest prompted the early opening of orders. At the same time, the company continues to promote the iX3, reporting that the crossover received more than 50,000 orders after reservations opened in Europe. Actual deliveries and the longer-term sales performance of both models will depend on production schedules and conditions in individual markets.
First Edition Equipment
At launch, the BMW i3 is available in the 50 xDrive First Edition configuration. This version is based on the M Sport model but adds several features that are normally offered separately. Standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, a head-up display, upgraded front seats, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
The vehicle also features a power-operated trunk lid and a suite of driver-assistance systems. The options list remains extensive, allowing buyers to select additional electronic assistants, interior finishes, and other personalization features separately.
Technical Specifications
The electric sedan measures 4.76 meters in length, while the i3 50 xDrive has a curb weight of 2,280 kg. This figure is primarily attributable to the large traction battery and dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.
Battery capacity is rated at 108.7 kWh. BMW claims a driving range of up to 710 km under the U.S. EPA cycle, although real-world distance will depend on temperature, driving speed, terrain, and climate-control use. The automaker also says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 21 minutes when connected to a high-power DC fast charger.
The top speed of the i3 50 xDrive is electronically limited to 200 km/h. The vehicle is positioned for comfortable long-distance travel and everyday use rather than the performance focus associated with traditional BMW M models.
Pricing and Position in the Lineup
In Germany, the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition starts at €75,340. That is approximately €9,440 more than the standard i3 50 xDrive. At this price, the electric sedan approaches more powerful conventionally powered models from the brand, including the diesel BMW M340d.
The new i3 illustrates how BMW is expanding its electric portfolio in the premium segment. The model combines a large battery, all-wheel drive, and a broad range of equipment, although its market performance will depend on real-world driving range, charging infrastructure availability, and customer interest in electric sedans of this class.
