BMW M2 Turbo Design: When the Past Meets the Future

BMW has released a special edition of the M2 inspired by the legendary 2002 Turbo model from the mid-1970s.

The 2002 Turbo was the first series-production European car equipped with a turbocharged gasoline engine. BMW has now paid tribute to this pioneering model through a special edition of its current M2.

Tribute to the Legend

The standout feature is the Alpin White exterior with signature BMW M stripes running along the body. The hood features an inverted "turbo" inscription designed to be readable in the rearview mirrors of vehicles ahead — a clear reference to the 1974 original. Wheel choices include standard black or optional gold finishes, as depicted.

Equipment and Pricing

The M2 Turbo Design is a fully equipped variant of the standard model, incorporating a carbon-fiber roof, premium audio system and sports seats as standard. This specification is reflected in the pricing.

In the United States the model is listed at approximately $83,000 (around €77,000). The regular M2 is roughly €15,000 less expensive. Options including the M Driver’s Package, which raises the limited top speed from 250 to 285 km/h, and the gold wheels can easily push the total beyond €100,000.

Manual Transmission: A Modern Rarity

Power is provided by the familiar 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine delivering 480 horsepower. The pairing with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive offers a direct driving experience that is uncommon in the current market. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 4.1 seconds.

Who It Appeals To

This edition is suited to enthusiasts who value the mechanical character of classic BMW models and a direct connection to the vehicle. Drivers prioritizing maximum performance may opt for the M2 CS, which produces 530 horsepower with an automatic transmission.

Historical Context

In 1974 BMW became the first European manufacturer to introduce a turbocharged engine in a production car. Although turbocharging was then primarily associated with racing, the 2002 Turbo laid the foundation for an era of powerful road-going vehicles.

Automotive technology has advanced considerably since, yet the pursuit of an engaging driving experience remains central. The M2 Turbo Design combines retro styling cues with contemporary engineering.
