BMW iX3: Electric SUV Priced at 70,000 Euros That Exceeded Market Expectations

The new BMW iX3 has become one of the most discussed electric vehicles in recent months

The model opens the Neue Klasse family and has already demonstrated high demand at the start of sales: the entire production quota for 2026 was sold out in advance. This article explains what exactly attracted buyers to the iX3 and why it proved successful against the backdrop of restrained growth in the electric vehicle market in Europe.

Risky Design and a New Chapter for BMW

BMW has taken a noticeable departure from its familiar styling. The iX3's appearance sparked debates even before sales began: the massive radiator grille, inspired by the 1960s BMW 1500 sedan, and completely new lighting make the car easily recognizable but atypical for the brand.

The dimensions emphasize the model's status. The body length is 4.78 meters, width about 1.9 meters. Wheel diameters from 20 to 22 inches shape the image of a large and solid SUV oriented towards long trips and comfort.

Commercial Success Even Before Deliveries Begin

Despite cautious attitudes towards electric vehicles in Europe, the BMW iX3 proved to be an exception. After the public premiere at the Munich Auto Show, the company received over 3,000 orders, with many customers placing purchases without seeing the car in person or taking a test drive.

The production capacity of the plant in Debrecen, Hungary, allows for up to 150,000 vehicles per year, but even this volume was insufficient to cover the demand for 2026. New orders are now being formed with delivery no earlier than 2027.

Technical Platform and Powertrain

The BMW iX3 is offered in a single 50 xDrive version. The car is equipped with two electric motors with a total power of 469 hp and all-wheel drive. For the first time in a production BMW model, an 800-volt electrical architecture is used.

The traction battery with a capacity of 109 kWh provides a range of up to 805 kilometers. Thanks to support for DC fast charging up to 400 kW, it is possible to replenish up to 372 kilometers of range in about 10 minutes.

Additionally, the iX3 supports energy transfer functions:

  • V2L — powering external devices;
  • V2H — supplying power to household appliances and the home.

Efficiency and On-Road Behavior

The large range is achieved not only due to the battery but also thanks to a low aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.24. This is one of the best figures in the SUV class.

In terms of handling, the iX3 is primarily oriented towards comfort. The suspension is tuned softly but without loss of stability, and the steering provides precision and predictable feedback. As a result, the car is well-suited for both long journeys and daily use.

Summary

The BMW iX3 has shown that an electric SUV priced around 70,000 euros can be commercially successful even in conditions of moderate demand for electric vehicles. The combination of high autonomy, modern platform, and expressive design has allowed the model to go beyond a niche product and become an important milestone in the brand's development.
