Bentley Revives Gasoline Power: Brand Recommits to Traditional Engines

It seemed only recently that Bentley was definitively heading into the world of electric vehicles

The company had promised to completely abandon internal combustion engines by the end of the decade, and the legendary W12 was already retired. However, it turned out not to be so straightforward: customer preferences, expressed through their purchasing decisions, led to a sharp change in plans. Bentley has decided to invest in a new generation of V8 engines and prolong the life of its classic motors — at least for the next ten years.

From Electromania to a Balanced Strategy

For a brand associated over decades with the roar of powerful eight- or twelve-cylinder engines, the push toward silent electric vehicles presented notable challenges. Bentley customers were slow to embrace models that lacked the familiar driving sensations. As sales declined, the company took a step back to focus on what it does best: developing vehicles that deliver engaging performance.

New Era for Classic Powertrains

According to Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser, the company will continue to offer a variety of powertrains to meet customer demands. Moreover, a new fully gasoline-powered Bentley is expected by the end of this year. This is not merely symbolic—the brand plans to continue producing gasoline versions after 2035 in regions where legislation allows it.

Bentley is not alone in this approach. Its Volkswagen Group counterpart Porsche is actively investing in synthetic fuel development, providing a viable path to extend the lifespan of internal combustion engines. This strategy may enable the coexistence of environmental considerations and traditional performance in the luxury segment.

Bentley Supersports — Revival of a Legend

The first model reflecting this new direction is the Bentley Supersports. It will be equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine delivering approximately 640 horsepower. Significantly, all power will be directed to the rear wheels only—a rare setup for Bentley that promises a more driver-centric experience. The engineers have also focused on weight reduction, resulting in a vehicle that combines dynamic sports car capabilities with luxury refinement.

Pricing Considerations

Official prices have yet to be announced, but estimates suggest a range of 280,000 to 300,000 euros. While substantial, this aligns with the brand's positioning, where value derives from both comfort and distinctive character. The Supersports is poised to restore the performance edge that some enthusiasts felt was at risk during the transition to electrification.

Strategic Outlook

The decision highlights the sustained appeal of internal combustion engines among luxury buyers seeking the sensory elements of traditional motoring. Although electrification remains a core long-term objective, Bentley's approach ensures powertrain diversity where regulations permit, balancing innovation with customer preferences.
