Land Rover Rethinks Electrification Plans as Defender Sport Adds Hybrid Options

The upcoming Defender Sport, previously expected to launch exclusively as an electric vehicle, could also be offered with hybrid powertrains. The change reflects conditions in key markets, particularly the United States, where demand for fully electric vehicles has developed more slowly than automakers initially anticipated.

The EMA Platform Takes On a New Role

The future compact Land Rover models are expected to use the EMA architecture. Several years ago, the company indicated that the platform could support vehicles with internal combustion engines. Those plans were later revised, with EMA repositioned as an electric-only architecture intended to underpin new models that would gradually replace versions powered by conventional engines.

Jaguar Land Rover now intends to adapt EMA once again for additional types of powertrains. The focus is not expected to be on conventional gasoline or diesel models without electrification, but primarily on hybrids. This approach would allow the company to retain fully electric variants while also offering vehicles for buyers who prioritize extended range, conventional refueling and long-distance travel without relying entirely on charging infrastructure.

What Is Known About the Defender Sport

The Defender Sport will be a more compact addition to the Defender family. It is positioned as a smaller alternative to the current Defender, whose latest generation debuted in 2020. Prototypes have already been photographed during road testing. Despite the camouflage, the vehicles reveal angular bodywork and distinctive proportions that echo the larger model.

The Defender Sport was originally planned exclusively as an electric vehicle. Early projections suggested an energy efficiency of up to 7.2 kilometers per kWh. Combined with battery capacities ranging from 70 to 90 kWh, this was expected to provide a practical driving range for everyday use and longer journeys.

An 800-volt electrical system supporting fast charging at up to 350 kW was also anticipated. This level of charging capability could significantly reduce charging times at compatible stations. The model's estimated starting price was previously reported at approximately €40,000, although the revised technical strategy could affect its final pricing.

Why the Company Is Changing Course

North America is expected to be one of the Defender Sport's most important markets. While demand for electric vehicles remains significant in the region, buyers continue to choose gasoline, diesel and hybrid models, particularly in the SUV segment. For Land Rover, offering no alternative to a fully electric powertrain could limit the new model's potential customer base.

The revisions to the EMA platform are expected to extend beyond the Defender Sport. Future generations of the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar are also set to use this architecture. These models may likewise offer hybrid variants alongside fully electric versions.

Expected Launch Timeline

The Defender Sport was tentatively expected to debut in late 2026, with sales beginning in 2027. The decision to add hybrid powertrains could affect that schedule, although the company may still introduce the electric version first and expand the lineup with additional variants later.

Jaguar Land Rover is therefore moving away from an exclusively electric lineup for some of its future Land Rover models. The revised strategy is expected to combine electric vehicles and hybrids on a shared platform, giving the brand greater flexibility in responding to differences between markets and customer requirements.
